ikebowen.com
A new theme every week, seems like. :) ikebowen.com is my personal website, with… well, you can see it as well as I can. Discovered TXP a while back and it’s honestly the best CMS that I’ve dealt with thus far (excluding the Duck, but that hasn’t been publicly released yet, so…). I’ve used it in… what, 5 sites so far? Something like that.
So yeah, have a look around, let me know what you think. Enjoy.

Re: ikebowen.com
Not very appealing.Nothing about that site made me want to stay and look around. The colors are drab and that iframe thingy is just horrific.
Merry Christmas!

Nice job ikebowen! It’s a unique site with the 100% width and 200px high container. I can’t beleive you could fit so much into such little spaces! The side contact form is really neat, by the way. However, at 1280×1024, it looks kind of odd to see this excellent fluid layout shrunken to a miniscule height. Maybe 400px would work better?
I would say the colors are more corporate than anything. Too add a little more interest, add some kind of vivid orange or green (like #FC0) as a link hover or something. But the look itself is appealing given the gray skies of winter…
Excellent work,
JM

Iframe? Are you kidding? But then, you’re “from Wordpress”. That makes more sense. ;)

Re: ikebowen.com
ikebowen: some people use the word “iframe” to describe any non-form element in a page which has a scrollbar attached to it.
As for the site… very corporate looking, especially with the clock on the right. But I really can’t stand readin it because I feel like you are forcing too much width on the body text and I constantly have to scroll to get more.
“Welcome” messages are actually discouraged for many sites because the design and logo should tell a person enough about the site that they will know what the site is and why they are there. Unfortunately, at first glance I thought that you had a corporate website, not a personal site.
And what does the clock have to do with you? It should be made more obvious if it does have anything to do with you or your work.

- The size of the body… yeah. The horizontal-bar layout was kind of an experiment, modeled after a site that I saw forever ago and was a bit impressed by a style that I hadn’t seen before. Not sure if I like it, actually, but I wanted to play with it. :)
- The welcome message – really? Makes sense, I suppose. I’ll have to give that more thought; good point.
- The clock is there for two reasons:
- It was a cool photo that I saw on the stock.XCHNG
- I’m 17 as of December 16th. :)
Thanks for the feedback, guys. Feedback is good. Hurrah for feedback.

lol… that doesn’t change the fact that in my oh so humble opinion, your design is quite bad.

Re: ikebowen.com
bhoney,
Your feedback “is quite bad”.
You may consider a little more constructive feedback. I don’t think that Ikebowen put his site up here as an expert to show it off, but like many of us, to see what people think of it? How about some critical dialog?
Ikebowen,
I agree with bhoney and Paul, about the layout. Have you read Don’t make me think?
You ought to. I know this is just a personal sight, but as someone looks at your work, or your site, they are going to judge what they see based on all kinds of criteria. Consider the clock. Paul is correct, it connotes work, and even better, business or an ecommerce site which will produce something on time under a deadline. The clock image comes with TONS of baggage, which might be good if you want to carry that baggage, but if not, choose something else, and choose wisely.
If you’re like me, you want to create something new and unique all the time, but then that’s hard to do well in an environment where people are essentially gathering information. If you intend to use your site for information dispersal, even if its personal, you may consider utilizing a traditional layout, while manipulating more minor aspects of the design than the overall layout, to offer your unique vision?
I have been told, and am starting to believe that making a site for which there is little purpose can be troublesome for you and boring for all, so take some more time to think through what you are trying to do, and surf until your fingers ache, and learn from others, their mistakes and successes. There is no such thing as originality, only creativity within your given boundaries : remixing. You are not an island :)
Hope that spurs you on.
Matthew

Re: ikebowen.com
I gave him what he wanted… an opinion.Unfortunately he didn’t like it and insulted me because I use Wordpress… how silly. If one cannot take the opinions of others, then maybe they shouldn’t ask for them.I didn’t know I needed to bring formula and diapers for babies who can’t take the answers they ask for.
Peace

People ask for the opinions of others hoping to learn from them. Just telling someone his design is ‘quite bad’ doesn’t create much of a learning opportunity, does it?

Oh shut up…. :) Bhoney gave his opinion and that’s that. Let it go.
Matthew: I honestly hadn’t thought about the connotations attached to the clock graphic. That’s something I’ll have to give a bit of thought to for the next endeavor… And a similar answer regarding Don’t Make Me Think; I’ll have to pick that up from the library sometime.
Most of my design experiments don’t last more than a few weeks, so Behoney will have something new to look at soon. ;)
