Comment Spam Control

Hey there,

Before I get into this, I want to say that I’ve been using TXP for about a year, now and I haven’t been happier with a piece of software. I’m quite happy I ditched Wordpress for it, even though getting the whole thing set up and running was a bit of a bear (I, of course, wanted to change a million things, but didn’t want to actually edit any of the code for easy upgradability). I’ve even completely gotten over my dependency on trackbacks, and have decided that they’re worthless.

That said, I’m really disappointed in the methods we have to control comment spam. There are:

1: Blacklist
2: Preview Button
3: Moderate

Originally, I let the blacklist do the heavy lifting, even though I find blacklists to be terribly inaccurate. Then, I started getting emails from users who can’t comment on the site becuase their provider has been caught in a blacklist. So, I turned off the blacklist. I had the blog set to moderate comments, so I figured this wasn’t an issue.

Months and months pass. No spam comes into my mailbox begging for moderation (like it did on my WP blog), so I had nothing to worry about but genuine comments. But, then I had another problem – even though I had posted very clear that all comments were moderated, I still got emails about once or twice a month from people wanting to know why it was that their comments didn’t go through immediately. I’d have to explain to them, once again, that the comments were moderated.

After several months passed and I saw no spam, I took a look around the net for more Textpattern spam control, and found very little. Most every request gets rebuffed with a note that the preview button takes care of a lot of the comment spam issues.

I figured I was in luck, and that’s why I’d been safe all of these months, so I turned off the moderation.

Two weeks later, I’m spammed. Luckily, I was awake and at my computer when it happened, so I moderated, then turned off the comments for a short while. I turned them back on again and unmoderated them the next day, only to get hit again within a couple of hours. These are automated. There are several (over 20 in the first hit before I caught it, all within a minute), and they come from different IP addresses.

Obviously, the preview button has been circumvented. Now, I was running on a very old version, so I came back here right away and updated to the most recent version. I was hoping I could find something better for dealing with spam, but it’s the same as it was.

I think that the time when the preview button was the dissuader has gone.

Here are my logs. There’s an occasional valid hit in there, from me trying to turn off / delete the spam as it was coming in. These are easy to find. They have no referers, go to specific posts (rather than hitting the front page and going off), and come in very rapid succession.

This is already being discussed. You may find more help/info there, and help pitch in to see what the problem is.

As I recall, the large majority of discussion regarding the preview button has been about removing it for convenience sake. That aside, it isn’t the button alone that acts as a barrier, though it is part of it:

  1. “forced” preview (that’s in quotes for a reason)
  2. ip blacklist check
  3. basic duplicate message check
  4. nonce check

Before I get into this, I want to say that I’ve been using TXP for about a year, now and I haven’t been happier with a piece of software.

You’re not in danger of “fan-bois” here (if you are, I shall smite them in mine wrath). ;) Intelligent discussion and input (even just logs, you don’t have to be technically minded) is always encouraged and appreciated.

If anyone has been “rebuffed” I’d venture to guess they would or could not offer their data (be it logs or whatever) for analysis, let alone offer a viable alternative. You can’t fix what doesn’t appear to be broken.

This is the first time I’ve seen what appears to be Textpattern-targeted crap, which isn’t surprising because the software is becoming more popular. So Textpattern will evolve, just like other software does.

…even though I had posted very clear that all comments were moderated, I still got emails about once or twice a month from people wanting to know why it was that their comments didn’t go through immediately…

Are you using the latest stable version? because, all moderated comments get a message back:

Thank you for adding your comment. Your comment is pending moderation. It will appear after it has been approved.

whereas if it shows up immediately, you get:

Thank you for adding your comment.

I dunno how it can be clearer than that. Maybe punch up the font, something like:

That said, lots of people just refuse to read what’s in front of their face. Those are the same people that cause fear and dread to fall upon customer service and tech support workers all over the globe…

The reality is that there is not much that anyone can do to totally suck the life out of spam. There are various techniques, which work with greater and lesser efficacy depending upon the situation.

Forums, for example, battle this problem via registration and/or team moderation. Blogs don’t usually have the benefit of a team of moderators, nor do they want to force registration upon their visitors.

In svn right now, there are hooks being added for comment spam-related plugins, so we’ll be potentially adding defence diversity, a technique in and of itself.

One thing WordPress has, via a plugin, is blacklisting certain words (and either blocked or held for moderation). That could be one possibility. Another, built-in, is holding comments for moderation only if they contain a certain number of links.

I’m more than willing to put some grunt work into a spam plugin, but like others I want to see my work directed towards an attainable goal, which means the community needs data and troubleshooting results. There’s little point in a plugin which doesn’t address real situations.

The no referers part you mentioned, means that you can’t know their entry/exit. I myself have a Firefox extension which masks the referer, meaning I can come and go throughout your site like normal, but you’d see me as always going to specific urls.

Ahh, but I like giving credit where credit is due. :) I’ve been through Movable Type, Wordpress and even toyed with Drupal a little, and Textpattern just fills all of the gaps for me.

Yes. I find the difference with me is in blacklists I can control and blacklists I can’t control. For the most part, the provider is going to give me valid data, and I can worry about them updating it. However, it’s difficult for me to explain to someone that I know, who comes to my blog and tries to post that they must go to some third party and ask them to remove their IP from a list because someone had it once and abused it.

That’s the inaccurate part. As the end user, I’d be happier with the third-party blacklist if I had some options:

  1. A log as to who and what is being denied and when.
  2. A method of overriding portions of the third-party blacklist.

So that, if someone mails me and says that they’ve been blocked I can find their IP and add it to an ‘OK’ list, and let them post again instead of having to go and sort it out with the third party.

This is the first time I’ve seen what appears to be Textpattern-targeted crap, which isn’t surprising because the software is becoming more popular. So Textpattern will evolve, just like other software does.

A mixed blessing, I suppose. :) I was rather shocked last night when it started popping up in my inbox. I’d been oh-so-happily spoiled rotten after having to constantly babysit my Wordpress blog.

Are you using the latest stable version?

I just upgraded to the most stable version today, though I had in big letters that comments were moderated, myself, even before then. I’m just guessing that people aren’t reading it. No big surprise, there. :) I can’t make them really read it, but to be honest, I’d rather be lazy and not have to go in and approve their comments.

One thing WordPress has, via a plugin, is blacklisting certain words (and either blocked or held for moderation). That could be one possibility. Another, built-in, is holding comments for moderation only if they contain a certain number of links.

That was nice, but it had it’s issues. Spammers used back-doors to get around it, and invariably succeeded, so you had to keep up on the list. Plus, as time marches on they change the things that they’re spamming about. There was also a check to see how many links were in the post. You could tell it that if there were so many beyond a certain threshold to pop the message into moderation.

I also used a third-party add-on that worked as a sort of blacklist you had to manually update. It searched the message, itself, for particular domain names that the spammers liked to put in the message, and rejected them if it contained that. That could also be used with particular words, too. Even at that, you had to keep up with manually updating it.

I’m more than willing to put some grunt work into a spam plugin, but like others I want to see my work directed towards an attainable goal, which means the community needs data and troubleshooting results. There’s little point in a plugin which doesn’t address real situations.

I’m more than willing to guinea pig anything you throw at me. :) I’d be happy to help wherever I possibly can, from testing code to providing logs and comment data when it comes up. I guess what the attainable goal is, for me, is to have full flexibility and solutions for dealing with spammers. I don’t think that we’re going to ever knock them out completely, and I doubt there’s an all-in-one solution, but I’d really like to have more options when it comes to dealing with the problem… especially if this is just the beginning (which I imagine it is).

So here’s my mini wishlist:

  1. Log existing blacklists denies.
  2. Link those denies up to an option to override that blacklist deny.
  3. Include a manual blacklist of words / addresses / etc… that go to spam sites.
  4. Add a link to the comments to parse a particular comment for those addresses.

Also, something no one’s ever done, and I’d die for is to seperate the regular, approved comments, comments awaiting moderation, and comments that are suspected as spam. That way, I can mark as spam and flush the bad ones without affecting any normal approvals. With the normal comments waiting for moderation queue, I could also have the option of selecting and approving all (something I miss from Wordpress).

The no referers part you mentioned, means that you can’t know their entry/exit. I myself have a Firefox extension which masks the referer, meaning I can come and go throughout your site like normal, but you’d see me as always going to specific urls.

Yes, but the average person isn’t going to be using that. I should have added that they also come in rapid succession, so I can tell. I’m really not popular enough to get so many hits from so many different places to so many different posts in less than a minute. :)

Astarte, I feel your pain. We’ve been made aware that automated spam is getting through textpattern about 1-2 weeks ago (roughly, from the top of my mind), and if my own personal matters hadn’t gotten in between, we would have a release right now, that made life somewhat easier. For that I apologize.

I am also not a big fan of blacklists and bans, so there will be other methods to wrok against spam.

Yes, that’s what we had in mind, and what I have on my to-do list and it will hopefully be here soon. We will also make it easy for plugin-authors to make this decision.

Please read the other thread (linked by mary), as there two suggestion that may help you. One is (if you’re familiar with txp) to test the current from /development/4.0, and the alternative is to install the plugin I posted there.
