Permalinks don't work on a new install

Hello,

I just installed Textpattern on my server. When I try to click on the permalinks for my posts, I get an error saying that the document is not found. I have tried every permalink formatting convention, and only ?id=messy seems to work. Is there a problem with my PHP settings? I haven’t found this mentioned anywhere in the FAQ.

Searched for permalinks and permanent links… I’ll add permlinks to my vernacular as well.
