Standards compliance?

I’d like to start a thread on standards compliance. I read an article recently that discussed how overly obcessed peopole are in satisfying compliance that it often leads to poor design and non-compliance with a group of the browser community. Opinions?

Re: Standards compliance?

Can you give us some examples?

A far as I can see the major problems with standards compliacne derive from the fact that the major browser on the market has the worst standards compliance. A huge amount of work has gone into developing ways to support the standards and be nice to IE users. I suspect that there are far more sites that only work in IE as opposed to sites that don’t work in IE and do work in modern browsers.

Web standards are in everyone’s interests: they have enabled the development of new browsers to compete with IE with better facilities for users. How long would we have been waiting for IE7 if it had not been for Firefox? Even people who only ever use IE have reason to be grateful for web standards.
