…and thus, a backup of your Textpattern install is highly recommended before doing anything.

Anyone could give me some advice on where to start? I just want to change the header and footer.

Re: Am I able to skin the admin portion?
The admin CSS is controlled from textpattern/textpattern.css. If you want to change colors, modify that file.
The images for the admin interface can be found in textpattern/txp_img/.
Everything else is in textpattern/lib/txplib_head.php.

Might want to consider making the style changes via the hpw_admincss plugin instead. That way, your custom styles don’t all disappear if you try to upgrade your TXP installation in the future.
