Using a permanent link mode other than "messy"

i’ve run into this problem before and fixed it, i just don’t remember how. I’m using the permanent link mode “section/id”, but when I click on a perm. link it says the page can’t be found. And when I point my browser to domain.com/section it doesn’t go to that section, it says it can’t be found again. soooo how do i fix this? I remember it was pretty easy….

thanks!

I suspect this is to do with .htaccess so do you have an .htaccess file in your site’s root directory and even if you do, does your host allow the use of mod_rewrite rules?

No. Do I have to create this? and if so, how? there must be a guide some where.
