a church website

Hello, hoping to get some feedback on this site (especially on improvements needed):

This is the original site and here’s the redesign we’ve been working on and hoping to launch sometime very soon. Both sites run on Textpattern.

Re: a church website

Both seem very “business like” in that they have that certain aloof impersonal aura that goes with corporations – the redesign moreso than the original. They could use a bit more life and colour. My biggest objection is the low contrast text. Grey text on white is not very readable.

Re: a church website

Thanks so much. That’s just the kind of feedback I was hoping for. Just made the text color a little darker (#333). Don’t know how much that helps.

Any other suggestions for giving the site a warmer, more welcoming feel?

Re: a church website

I really like the look and feel of the site. I’m 1/2 Japanese, and went to a largely Asian church growing up. This seems to be the sort of look that the target demographic is drawn to. I would suggest a Photo-shoppy header image, nothing too strong, but something subtle. It would help warm up the feel a little bit. When the text resizes, the nav breaks, but that wouldn’t be too hard to fix.

Overall, it’s a very clean and nice looking site. If you can get it validating, I’d love to feature it on www.Godbit.com

Re: a church website

I agree with NyteOwl, it could use some more colour. Also you might want to try add a header image. You’ve got some beautfiul photos already so I’m sure you should be able to use some of those or take some others maybe to use in the header. You could probably even get some colour ideas from your photos to use as well. Also, not sure if I’m the only one, but the text seems kind of small. Maybe make it a bit bigger. I’m liking what you have done so far though.

Keep up the good work.

ccrc,

Good work. I liked your 404 form.

How did you do the second level menus, are they categories with a plugin?

Re: a church website

Nathan: Thanks for your tips. We’ll try to clean it up and will definitely let you know when it’s done. We’d love to have it featured on Godbit! The nav breaking and validating issues are somewhat beyond me, just an amateur copying what’s already been done elsewhere, but I’ll take a look into it.

axle_foley00: Thanks for the compliments on the photos. Mostly, someone from our church with a newly acquired Nikon D50. Yeah, the small text, still thinking about that one. I go back and forth on it.

aboyce: The second level menus are done with help from codylindley.com. Basically, we copied what he did. He was very cool about it. It’s similar to the top level navigation achieved through CSS, just tacked on to the bottom of it.
