Thanks; the answer is that it cannot be done out of the box. All previous posts were opinions about whether I should do it.
BTW:
/foo/
and
foo.html
are not viewed the same way by a search engine and more so when you consider:
/foo/and/bar/
and
fooandbar.html
Certain search engines do consider the hierarchy within which a document resides, granting greater or lesser import in their indices depending on whether a URI is buried under recursions of sub-directories.
