large photo gallery (hundreds and hundreds of images)
I’m slowly assembling my news web site and I’m working on the photo gallery part of it right now.
My question is: can all you fellow Textpatterners see a better way?
This is my plan so far:
Textpattern will drive the core of the site. All stories will be on txp, and if that story has a photo, txp will be used for that photo and cutline. If there are more photos available, I’ll put a “More photographs” link under the main photo. That link will then connect to a relevant Photostack page with additional photos.
For example, on a basketball game story, there’d be an accompanying single photo with the story. This single photo would be displayed using the standard TXP tags. Under the photo would be a link to 50 more photos from that basketball game. That link would go to the appropriate Photostack url. Over time, the number of such stories and galleries will quickly accumulate to hundreds or possibly thousands of images.
Here’s my rationale for doing it this way:
Texpattern alone, as I understand it, would require a new category for each photo gallery. As I intend to add hundreds of galleries to the site, the category list in txp will become unweildly. Also, the /images folder for textpattern would also become full with more files than I’d care to see in one folder. The plug-in rss_thumbpop would have the same problem.
Photostack would be better for a large gallery as you can use folders and subfolders to organize images.
One disadvantage to using Photostack is that cutlines would not be searchable from Textpattern’s search function.
I’ve also evaluated plogger, zenphoto, albumpattern, EUWDPCpix, folderblog, textpattern gallery 1.21, rssthumbpop, simpleviewer, photopattern, dynamic gallery plugin and zem_article_image, but I feel confident that Photostack is the best in this particular case. (?)

Yes, use a proper image gallery application. Textpattern certainly can be used to power a photoblog or smaller gallery, but from your description I’d say go with something created for the purpose.

I recommend Gallery 2. It’s very scalable and has a very good API.

This forum post should give you a shortcut to using txp tags in photostack. It sure helped me. :)

soulship and all, you might want to keep in mind that the new version of Photostack has a completely different codebase to the old and therefore I very much doubt if that thread will be of any use.
