...nest conditionals?

Hi!

I’d like to show excerpts for articles that have excerpts and the whole body for the articles that don’t have excerpts on my homepage. I’ve read the article about displaying excerpts on the homepage on zem’s faqs, but I cannot manage to get the conditional working… Just for logic:

if article list
- if excerpt
  - excerpt
else
- body
/if excerpt

else
- body
/if article list

Or is there something wrong? How can I achieve what I’ve been trying with that code?
