Character Limits, Different Textpatterns

How do you limit how many characters are displayed on a post? Say you’ve got an opening page, with a set space for the update. How do you, in Textpattern or CSS, limit how many characters are in it, then have a [continue…] or [read more…] link at the end? I’ve seen this on other Blogs but can’t figure it out. I’m still new, so, you know, don’t think I’m stupid.

Also, how would you set up another Textpattern folder for a different site? I have a blog up now at http://foreignperspective.com , but would rather it be in a subdirectory, so I can do other things. But, unfortunately, the Textpatterns update both of them and I can’t figure how to install two seperate ones.

Any help would be appreciated!
