cannot view sections

hi,

from my understanding, i should be able to view sections i’ve created by going to www.mysite.com/section/
assuming that’s correct, i’ve been trying to view my sections that way but i’m getting a “Not Found” page.

the entire message is:

Not Found

The requested URL /textpattern/shows/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

after getting this i searched the forum and saw that i need to change my preferences in the admin tab. i changed my permanlink mode from ?=messy to section/title but i’m still getting the above error. and at this point i’m not sure what to do.

any help greatly appreciated. thanks!

Re: cannot view sections

As per the FAQ, either your host doesn’t support .htaccess at all or it needs customizing. You might find a solution for your hosting company here.

Re: cannot view sections

hey, i’m using dreamhost and i contacted them and this was their response.

Hello,

Mod-rewrite is enabled on all Dreamhost servers. You will need to contact
the support department for Movabletype for assistance with their
application.

Thanks!

“…not sure why he said moveabletype…”

Because you got an automated response.

We have a few Dreamhost-ers around, so someone should be able to help you with specifics.

Did you upload a file name .htaccess?

Re: cannot view sections

hey mary,

thanks for the response. i actually didn’t upload .htaccess. i’m actually not sure where to locate that file. i noticed in the dreamhost panel there is a htaccess/webdav menu option but i’m not sure if that’s helpful. thanks! j

Re: cannot view sections

It should go into your root directory alongside the index.php file.

Re: cannot view sections

It was included with the Textpattern download. The file list is:

  • files (directory)
  • images (directory)
  • textpattern (directory)
  • .htaccess (note that htaccess is the file’s extension, the file has no name)
  • index.php
  • HISTORY.txt
  • README.txt

If you can’t see it, your operating system is probably hiding it from you. Are you on Windows? Mac?

Re: cannot view sections

Ok, if you’re using ftp to upload your files, your ftp software should have a “reveal hidden files” setting. Enable it and you should be able to see the file through the local file listing.

If you want to work with any .htaccess files (if, say, you need to adjust your clean url mod rewrite rules for your host), then you’ll need to adjust your settings to help you easily find them. Macs I’m not too familiar with, so hopefully one of the local mac gurus will help you out. A quick Google search for this turned up this freeware program.
