Manchester Book Award

Manchester Book Award

Country: England
Name: Alan Holding
Genre: Local Government, Reading, Edukashun

Done in 4.0.2. EDIT – With the launch of Phase 2, upgraded to 4.0.3,

I don’t have access to a Mac (long story), so I’d be grateful if any Mac users out there could tell me what they see when they go to the books page.

Big thanks to the respective authors for the following plugins:

  • Stephen Bau, bau_article_thumb 0.2
  • Coke Harrington, chh_article_custom 1.14
  • Coke Harrington, chh_article_lib 1.01
  • Johan Nilsson/der GrauMeister, glx_admin_image 4.0.1
  • Rob Sable, rss_admin_show_adv_opts 0.1
  • Mary, upm_img_popper 0.9.5
  • Threshold State, zem_contact 0.6
  • zem, zem_link 0.3

EDIT – And now also, mucho thankso to:

  • Andrew Waer, ajw_comment_alt 0.3

I’ve also written my own plugin (first ever!) that spits out e-GIF compliant metadata for articles and sections – in effect answering my own wish from way back when.

However, I’m not going to release it for a few weeks yet as I need to add some admin side bits to it. There’s some hard-coded stuff specific to the book award website that I need to take out.

EDIT – Also written a second plugin that spits out a random comment based on a given article category. That’s what ths “random review” on the book award web site does. That will definitely be available in the next week. The metadata plugin is taking longer than I thought. Sorry. :(

Best,
Alan.

Re: Manchester Book Award

I find this site a real pleasure to look at, Alan. I like the colors, the font, I even like the rounded corners (and usually I’m not very fond of them…).

May I ask why you are still using chh_article_custom? Can it do something that article or article_custom can’t?

Hi doggiez,

You wrote:

Thanks! :)

The brief for this one was ‘keep it simple!’ The site is aimed at 11-14 year old lads and lasses and is supposed to encourage them to read.

We could have gone with the ‘its a kids website, so lets put billions of colours on the page’ approach, like the BBC and others do, but we wanted to put the focus on the words.

More pictures will be going up, such as when the kids start submitting their own book covers (can’t wait for that!), but we only had five days to do the site from scratch and other stuff (such as making sure the website worked) was more important.

May I ask why you are still using chh_article_custom? Can it do something that article or article_custom can’t?

Force of habit, and lack of time to get the site done! :) For some reason I could only get the random book rotation on the home page working with chh_article_custom. Now that the site has launched I will probably revisit that one.

Best,
Alan.

Re: Manchester Book Award

like the BBC and others do,

hmm… I must say I don’t exactly belong to the target audience, but had there been websites when I was 11-14, I’d still have preferred yours ;)

article_custom works with sortby="rand()".

Re: Manchester Book Award

Just to add to the congrats, I really like this site too, it has character and a nice friendly feel without being in any way comic-sans, if you know what I mean….. Well done!

And now the 2007 Award site is up. No real change apart from the design of the home page. Gotta love them rounded boxes! :)
