Make my portfolio design (template) work with PHP or something that is

Something about me.

Hi, I am a 3d designer and have little knowledge of coding/scripting but I do need to have my portfolio finished soon because I have to go and look for a new job (contract is ending with the company I work for at 30 December) So I started to make a new layout to present my personal information, work and interests.

Within 8 weeks I am unemployed, last five weeks I am taking all my build up free days and after that I am no longer getting a paid. So as you can imagine I need to get my portfolio in order a soon as possible.

Here is the build plan it is not finished yet but i need to go and look for a system to make it easy to update; images and or txt, before I complete my design I need to know my options. If I cannot do this with something like PHP I have to do it manually in Dreamweaver and that is what I am trying to avoid.

Is this possible to make it work this way or do need to go and ask it elsewhere (if so, where is elsewhere?)

Re: Make my portfolio design (template) work with PHP or something that is

hi dutchie,

if you don’t need the flash-based animated elements, there are plenty of ways of going about a portfolio site. Check alexandra’s TXP magazine for different kinds of sites or try searchs for “portfolio AND site” or “photography AND blog” or “photoblog” here on the forum. You’ll find the examples range from 1 article = 1 image to 1 article = 1 project complete with detailed description and project gallery in all manner of permutations.

You’ll need some web skills to get it up and going — textpattern’s not an auto gallery — but once you’ve got it set up you only need upload images and write a description, perhaps assign them to categories to add new projects. If you fancy changing your selection project or it’s not quite ready or pending permission, just set a project to hidden. And if a project is new and hot and has to be on the front page, then you just set it’s status to sticky. And if you decide you need a revamp at some time in the future, you can change your design whilst keeping all your projects and just output them differently.

I did some searching on the web and found these kind of systems.. but its hard to get what I want, don’t ask me why.. it should be so simple.. but there are so many possibilities and is do not know how to make what I want the best way. I need to do some more research i guess.

So I just wrote allot of txt .. and then I got a internet connection problem… so nou all the txt is gone bummer.

I just wanted to know if there was a guide to build you own custom template, becouse that is wat I was looking for. I have found several xml and or php driven flash gellerys that I can customize to work the way i want them.. but then I do not have a cms backoffice from where I can manage all my stuff.

Re: Make my portfolio design (template) work with PHP or something that is

Dutchie,
the closest thing you will find around here is over at textpattern.org where they have a bunch of templates you can look through, but none of them are premade portfolio templates. I have worked on my own folio stuff for about six months now and it ends up taking some time, especially when you are learning txp, which is well worth it. I wouldn’t charge ahead on this if you are in a hurry and don’t know coding. To create and format your own folio or gallery style site in txp in a clean and unique way takes time. Spend a week or two looking through all the materials about textpattern, and start experimenting and when you run into a SPECIFIC issue, come to the forum, people are always more than willing to help you through a specific issue, but rarely have I found anyone who responds too well to the broad “tell me how to do my site” type of questions. Believe me, when i started, I had plenty of them.

Hope that helps,

Matthew

Re: Make my portfolio design (template) work with PHP or something that is

hi dutchie, if like many of my dutch friends your German is any good, try also alex’ textpattern tutorial in German

Check the contents description on the right of the article. It details setting up a test installation on a local webserver, basics about how textpattern works in terms of structure and an example in practice. She has also collected a lot of the tips in the right-hand column for those questions that arise whilst working it out.

With a bit of perseverence you get the hang of it. You’ll have a more unique homepage and … you’ll also have a new string to your bow.
