Modify 4.01 so placeholder files work?

How can I modify Texpattern 4.01 so it uses the old placeholder files for clean URLs. I really like 4.01, but the new mod_rewrite rules it requires conflict with my installation of PHPList. If I can make 4.01 work with placeholder files I can avoid having to downgrade.
