No, that in itself is not enough to trigger what you experienced. If you need to change the RewriteRule, it is usually an indicator that you needed to use RewriteBase instead. In your case:
Rewritebase /txp/
(with the un-changed RewriteRule).

What I changed in the htaccess file works for me for sub directories.
When I install TXP in the root directory, I need to change the rule to /index.php instead of just index.php
I will also check out your link on clean urls. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :)

PS: The link you gave me mentions two hosts that use the rewrite base thing.
I am using Hosteurope (hosteurope.de) which could be added to that list (it’s a very popular German host, more so than Schlund & Partner which is mentioned in the description)
