Re: Which design / programming books you highly recommend?

For design: Zen of CSS design by Dave Shea. A really, really good book with a lot of theory as well as a lot of pratical examples.

I also bought Bulletproof Webdesign by Dan Cederholm, but haven’t read it yet. But I can’t wait to read it :P

From a non-designer’s perspective:-

The Non-Designer’s Design Book by Robin Williams – Describes basic principles of Proximity, Alignment, Repetition and Contrast. Worth getting if you never thought about these things before.

Designing Visual Interfaces by Mullet & Sano – I am half way through this and have already altered my redesign many times because of the great insights it has.

For CSS, I use CSS Pocket Reference by Eric Meyer a lot. He has more in-depth books and great web sites too.

Re: Which design / programming books you highly recommend?

Here are some more CSS recommendations (not really programming books but there seems to be a theme here already):

I have read dozens of CSS books and would agree that Dave Shea’s, Zen of CSS Design is a great book but not one I would recommend starting out with to learn CSS. Dan Cederholm’s Bulletproof CSS is also very good, as is his Web Standards Solutions. While these are all great books and deserve to be any web designers bookshelf, they fall into the “tips and techniques” category. For CSS books that focus on the “theory” you should check out anything written by Eric Meyer. All of his books should be required reading for web designers.

I would also highly recommend, Professional CSS-Cascading Style Sheets for Web Design by Christopher Schmidt, Mark Trammell, Ethan Marcotte, Dunstan Orchard, and Todd Dominy. This book establishes the foundations of CSS and then gives the “how and why” to many popular techniques. And with that many awesome CSS designers in one book, you know there’s going to be some valuable info. Cascading Style Sheets – Separating Content from Presentation by Owen Briggs, et al. is also a must read and who could forget Jeffrey Zeldman’s Designing with Web Standards.

I would recommend that people new to CSS start out with books by these authors:

  • Zeldman
  • Eric Meyer (get the O’Reilly book first – the one with the fish on it)

That should keep you busy for a while ;-)

Can’t recommend Designing with Web Standards enough. Anyone new to standards should read that. Bullet Proof Web Design is nice just to have all those tips in one place, but I was dissapointed that I already knew all the techniques

I also recently just bought DOM Scripting by Jeremy Keith and it’s a good introduction to unobtrusive Javascript techniques and it’s geared towards designers not programmers

Do you just want books on programming for the web and designing for the web?

Anyway, Elements of Typogrpahic Style is an excellent book on Typography.

Re: Which design / programming books you highly recommend?

Hi,

Here’s my favorite trio:

For understanding XHTML / web historical & cultural aspects : Designing With Web Standards – Jeffrey Zeldman – New Riders.

Getting hands dirty start with : Web Standard Solutions, The Markup and Style Handbook – Dan Cedreholm – Friends of Ed.

And for ideas and a practical focused approach read, as written supra : The Zen of CSS Design – Dave Shea – New Riders.

Cheers, Vincent.

Re: Which design / programming books you highly recommend?

Let’s start in english…

I also suggest for graphic design :
The Complete Guide to Digital Graphic Design, by Bob & Maggie Gordon.
Good book. Very good book about all subjects of design. A book about design culture, from paper to electronics.

Plus, the outstanding Adobe Photoshop for Photographers (since 6, 7, CS & CS2), by Martin Evening which is the best book I’ve read on the subject, even if it’s focused on photography this is a good reading for designers.

A good start with Adobe Illustrator would be The Adobe Illustrator Wow! Book serie (9, CS or CS2), by Sharon Steuer also a handbook full of practical cases.

On the french side, I love a serie of small books focused on a particular goal, made by designers for designers explaining their methods and workflow. This is very handy. Eyrolles is the publisher (best french publisher for graphic design book, has a wide array of books) of this serie called Cahier du designer.
You’ll find some titles translated in english under the… A Designer’s Notebook serie
You’ll even find this serie in spanish @ Amazon.

I let you discover those titles, I’m getting hungry.
