i need some help with my author pages

I’m using txp:author to link to an author’s page….

the url ends up looking like http://www.ohword.com/author/David+Donald … while it says author in the path it is actually uses the default section.

I want the cool effect it has of automatically knowing to only show whatever articles the author has written but I don’t want it using my default section because right now I have my homepage coded to use some php to tell if it’s an author page and do xyz if it is or else show whatever my homepage should show… This seems really sloppy and inconvenient to me.

I already tried creating a section called “author” but the author link still seems to be using the default section.

I need some guidance! Thanks in advance.

Re: i need some help with my author pages

Make a new page for Author that is set up how you want and set your author section to use that page.

On my site I have a section called “staff” that uses a seprate page for its formatting so that I can have a list of articles by the author and a bio. http://www.frontstretch.com/Staff/ will get you to the list of authors.

Edit: I just noticed that what I am doing isn’t really the same as what you are doing. I’m setting up an article for each writer that is reached through a staff page. You want to go direct from the author’s name without having to remember the link everytime.

Well, mine is an alternative then I guess. Sorry about that.

Re: i need some help with my author pages

That’s ok. Maybe I’ll do that ^ if I can’t get the other way to work. By the way, the end result on your site looks good.

Thanks

Re: i need some help with my author pages

I wonder if you could replace <txp:author link="1" /> with something like this:
<code>
<a href=”<txp:site_url />author/<txp:author />”><txp:author /></a>
</code>
You need to have a section called ‘author’ for this.

Re: i need some help with my author pages

Thanks guys for your help.

I used elements of both of your suggestions and it works out well.

It’ll be easy to add an overall staff page in the near future too. Thanks!

Re: i need some help with my author pages

So there is still no way to set a page template for the author auto-pseudo-section? Anybody got something less hackish than in-page php for customizing the author display?

Re: i need some help with my author pages

RenJosin, your Author-Pages are pretty cool. How did you realize the list of articles by autor?

Re: i need some help with my author pages

I used the rss_superarchive plugin. I have to use version 0.08 because version 0.15 stopped working after the 4.01 upgrade. It’s probably conflicting with another plugin I have so you may not have the same problem. If you do, I can email the 0.08 version to you.

One of my editors thought those lists were so important that she was editing them by hand every week which I always thought was a poor use of her time since it’s an all volunteer site. This has definately saved a LOT of time and freed her talents up for much more usefull tasks.

You need to have a section called ‘author’ for this.

But you need to encode the URL if you author’s name include non-ascii characters. Jérémie won’t play nice with URL for example.

Nope, this does not work, the system ignores the “author” section and just goes ahead and displays the author’s posts using the default page as usual. There is no difference in the URLs resulting from

<a href="<txp:site_url />author/<txp:author />"><txp:author /></a>

or

<txp:author link="1" />

They both give you http://www.site.com/author/name and so the system unfortunately treats them the same, which is very frustrating. Why can’t /author/ be a section?

Why can’t /author/ be a section?

For the same reason categories cannot. It has to do with how the article tag and sections are designed to work.
