txp:if_comments tag bug

Hello all,

I have a particularly annoying problem with TextPattern that I hope somebody can shed some light on (disclaimer: I’m pretty new to TXP).

The txp:if_comments tag simply doesn’t work as I would expect it to (or as it explicitly states it does). If I have a post with no comments and comments disabled, it will return false. However, if the post has no comments but comments are enabled, it returns true (cue me getting very irate).

I’ve installed the gho_comments_invite plug-in, just to see whether that exhibits similarly bizarre behaviour, but it recognises the lack of comments just fine. I’ve even reinstalled TXP, and it’s still happening.

If anybody could shed some light on what the problem is, I’d be most grateful. As a starter for ten, is it:

1. some unmentionable bug that everybody chooses not to talk about (what elephant?)
2. a problem specific to my machine
3. me being stupid
4. none of the above

This is driving me spare. I’ve even started thinking impure thoughts about WordPress…

Typical. I spend hours weeping over this, and then – within minutes of making a desperate plea to the outside world – find an article explaining that the tag is indeed useless in it’s current form.

The only remaining question is how to get the behaviour I’m looking for… but that’s probably a post better suited to a different category.

There are three tags: if_comments, if_comments_allowed, if_comments_disallowed. In 4.0.2, if_comments is fixed and all three allow for using ‘else’.

In the meantime you can use plugin tags, like the one you mentioned, and glx_if.
