Textpattern forum quoting issue

It has been fun for several month to edit the quoting markup by hand, adding bq. and so on. But would it be possible to edit the forum software to use the proper markup for us (and for code’s sake, and all things related like search engines) ?

Yes, and maybe explain a bit how it was done, because I anticipate needing to to this in a PunBB side project that we (collaborator and I) are working on where Textile will be implemented as it is here.
