Clean URLs that use organic soap...
Howdy!
So I’m desperately trying to use clean URLs in my site (that I love so much I only feed it the best, most animal-safe, organically grown blog engine I could find), and I thought I set it correctly in the admin settings, and I just know I have mod_rewrite working quite spankingly. However (and isn’t there always a however?) it doesn’t seem to play well. I even threw it a ball to see what it might do. Not very reassuring.
Here’s the rub – the site seems to work okay until you click on a link. Like, say, for example, the “Comment” link. Then I get one of my spiffy custom 404 errors. I didn’t know how irritating my 404 page was until I faced it a handful of times. Now I know.
But this doesn’t change the fact that if I use “messy urls” the site works like a charm. As soon as I change it to spankingly clean urls in the flavor I do so favor, it breaks. Please, please, please… help me!
Here’s the URL to my site so anyone inclined to give me advice can take a gander and see for themselves. I’ll keep the URLs set to “clean” so you can witness for yourself the itch.
Jose Sierra’s Spanktacular Site Featuring Flying Evil Monkeys!
Thanks ahead of time for any advice!

How do you know? The behaviour is exactly what I’d expect to see if mod_rewrite was disabled or unavailable.

Who’s your hosting provider? Maybe those who are also hosted there can offer you tips.

Re: Clean URLs that use organic soap...
I know mod_rewrite is working because I just finished installing and configuring Gallery for some photos (have it running parallel to Coppermine for comparison) and Gallery uses mod_rewrite for clean URL operation (which it does successfully…)
Normally I’d agree with you about mod_rewrite being missing, but the evidence seems contradictory. Hence my request for some outside (hopefully divine) intervention…

Exa-bytes. I’ve used them for many tens of thousands of sites (okay, maybe only hundreds) for a variety of clients, and found them to be very flexible and full-featured when it comes to installed modules.
Just to be sure, however (and I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to think of it…) I will contact the host and make absolutely sure that mod_rewrite is installed…

Can you post your diagnostics, please?

Of course… although now that I read through the diagnostics, I think I know where you’re going to verify things (just the guidance I needed, I suspect!)…

Re: Clean URLs that use organic soap...
Your .htaccess file isn’t the one that comes with Textpattern, and doesn’t include any of the rewrite rules necessary for it to work.

ROTFLMAO…
I can be such a monkey sometimes. Thank you so much for your guidance… it works beautifully now. You’re the best!
