the ever mysterious image_index and image_display tags

I have actually been using these two tags off and on since the Dawn of Textpattern. I like them because it takes a lot of the fuss work out of building a gallery, simply upload the images, give them a category and whoops, a gallery.

I have hacked around a bit in the publish/taghandlers.php file and much to my surprise, in the latest svn version, someone has actully worked on these tags! Does anyone know anything about this? There are a whole lot of new attributes, wraptags and the like. The one that interests me is the “type” attribute. It is set to “article” as a default and this implies that you might be able to make better use of these tags. Does anyone know about this?

And one more question, what I don’t like about these tags, is that when you enter a page, no picture is displayed. Anyone know how to change that?

Doesn’t the page URL change when a picture is “opened”? I think if you grab that URL and use it for your page link it would open with a picture already in situ.

Yeah, that might work, but right now I am dynamically calling the categories with the stw_category_tree plugin and I don’t really want to “hard wire” it. Although, for this project it would be ok, I would simply like to know how to make these tags more flexible.

The changes you have seen to the tags recently may be because the devs have been adding attributes to a variety of list tags to enable greater flexibility mostly for layout/styling. The original tags were created by Dean for his own particular use and I don’t think there are any plans to add more usability to them. I could be wrong of course. :)
