How do you test style and content changes when the site is live.

Hello. I am working on a few txp project locally on mac. I have never put a txp site up, so I am in the dark about some workflow issues.

How do you test css style and content if the site is uploaded to the server? When working in html you can test locally and then ftp the newer files to reflect changes with ease.

Do I keep working locally, then replace the remote database everytime I make a change? All while making sure my asset folders, such as the image folder, is the same?

Any insight would be helpful. It would help me plan ahead.

Same strategy as with any other method: use a separate Textpattern install for testing, either on your local machine or a subdomain or subdirectory on your server. It’s always a good idea to test template changes in Testing mode.

I can’t think of many situations where content requires testing that can’t be achieved with Textpattern’s Preview function.

I use a subdomain that people won’t guess easily (I like to be secretive) with a separate install and database. It is basically a mirror of my live site until I go live with changes or revert to the live version.

For a big change, maybe this is the best way. But if I’m working on the templates or css changes, I’ll usually just make a note of the changed files, then open side-by-side txp admin windows and copy them across one by one. Inelegant, perhaps, but easy enough for any of the revisions I have done.

I also make regular backups of the live database and then replace the test db with this to make sure I am in sync.

For minor and gradual CSS enhancement, I’m working with the exellent web dev plugin for Firefox I cans see css changes live, then I can paste in the CSS box if everything’s OK.

Niconemo, what plugin is that? The Web Developer?
