For God’s sake, what’s up with all the paperwork in France anyway? And even more, having to have a middle-man to handle everything? Rhetorical.

Welcome to our world ;)

Frankly, I don’t think french clients look at the tld. It may be nice, but it’s not that important. I know countless french website using international tld, and french business using a .com. I even know some french freelancers having their main website in english because they target international.

From my point of view, a fr. subdomain would be quite fine. It may even be an asset, showing off that you have already international experience and visibility.

On the other hand, as Davidm said, opening a .fr is a matter of having some paperwork at hand. They don’t need to be yours, and they don’t indicate much, including to others adminsitrations like our IRS.

Or you could wait a little, and open an .eu tld ; if you target other european clients. While in sunrise, there is paperwork needed, but it may be simpler if you have a local something (trademark, whatever). Or wait for next year, and register a .fr and/or a .eu when the paperwork is out of the way.

It seems this is the sensible way to go, since a .fr domain doesn’t make much difference; probably what I will do when/if the time comes.

Thanks
