Newbie's Guide

Hi,

I’ve been wandering round the various TextPattern sites on and off for a couple of days now looking for a Beginner’s Guide to Text Pattern. I’ve found one for authors, I’ve found lots of advanced material, I’ve found lots of unfinished documentation but nothing that gives me an overview of how TextPattern works.

I’ve inherited a TextPattern site based on v1rc2 and am having to go through page by page trying to reconstruct how it all works. This is, to say the least, time-consuming.

I have no problem with the code, the PHP or with CMSs in general. I could just do with a kick-start on TextPattern’s way of working.

Any suggestions very welcome.

Bob

PS How do you get to logon to the Wiki – that’s another little TextPattern mystery.

Re: Newbie's Guide

There isn’t a beginner’s guide as such for the simple reason nobody has had the urge, ability or free time to write one. If you get Textpattern figured out feel free to remedy the situation!

As for the wiki, I think you just wave your hand around a bit here and someone will let you in.

The wiki is probably the best place for finding all the tags and what they do, but the Textpattern FAQ also has a lot of useful information. Remillard wrote up a Textpattern 101 series a while back, but I don’t know if it’s up-to-date for the latest version of TXP.

You’ll need to email Remillard or Destry to get an account on the wiki; in order to keep it informative and free of junk, they create accounts for new authors manually.

Oh I get it – the system works by magic – or not :-D Perhaps someone who does have access could update that page on the Wiki

I got the tag list and I understand what they are and mostly what they do. I increasingly suspect that the guy who put together the site I inherited new less that I do and there is a lot of garbage in there.

The FAQ is also useful but not for the Newbie – apart from the install instructions it pretty much pre-supposes that you know what you are doing.

I’ve had a quick look at Textpattern 101 and printed it out to read later – looks as though that may give me more of what I’m looking for.

Could be – I’ve done that before . . . but don’t hold your breath.

Thanks & best wishes

Bob
