Re: Where's my site gone? Index.php vanished
I’ll look into it this instant….this fault isn’t resolved yet. And if I can’t get this to work – then I’m ditching textpattern and off to Wordpress! No install should be this fiddly.
Cheers Stuart and Mary for your help…I’ll be back here in a moment.

Matt if you want to continue using ftpx go into options and click on the “Connection” tab. The 3rd option down should be unchecked to show hidden files. I just installed it to find out.

You can’t blame Textpattern for your server being nutty, but hey whatever you want.
Would that be this FTP Explorer?

Mary – yep that’s the one. Thanks.
it’s seeming more like it’s my webhost and hosted server that’s being difficult though….. :(

I would say that they don’t allow .htaccess rules which means you may have this problem with other software that requires it. It will mean that you will not be able to use “clean” URLs at all. Give your host hell about it. :) Who are you using anyway?

Webmania
(Who I’ve had a very good opinion about so far…)

Yeah, I install new software whilst I’m here. Keeps you occupied. ;) I’m not seeing any info about Webmania here. I wonder if there is anyone else that uses them. Do you have a cPanel or some sort of overall control panel for your site?

Re: Where's my site gone? Index.php vanished
Stuart – when I log into the webmania site, there is a user admin area incl. MySql Admin…
Update: The Webmania boys have (helpfully) removed not one, but two .htaccess files (diff. directories)…and I’ve tested my site – and it works fine!!
Following your remarks, Stuart, I also took the liberty of asking them why I caouldn’t edit or delete the .htaccess files…and they said it was because they were hidden…so I asked further about if I could edit them using ftp…there only answer was ‘no’. So then I asked – well, does that mean I can only ask the helpdesk to edit or delete these files then? There answer was yes.
So….note for future textpattern users – .htaccess files might need to be deleted – and there needs to be a way of doing that.
Stuart: are clean URLs going to be importnat then…if I don’t have them? winces

No they aren’t important. They just look neater. For example yoursite.com/index.php?s=about which is a “messy” URL to go to your about section would simply be yoursite.com/about as a “clean” URL.
