list categories under it's section
I’d like to have a navigation list of sections with categories underneath like (a sort of sitemap):
Section 1
Section 2
-Category 5
-Category 6
Section 3
-Category 1
-Category 2
-Category 3
Section 4
I’ve found some plugins that list categories depending on the category you are on, but I want to list all categories and all sections at the same time.
Is this possible?

Categories are available to all sections. I don’t know of any existing built-in or plugin tag that will return your list, so you’d need to request a plugin in the plugins forum.

What’s the best way to display categories that come under one section? For example:
News
—world
—europe
Once in the News section how do you link to the world and europe categories since categories are available to all sections?
Edit: I am sure I am missing something easy. The way I was thinking of doing it is like on the FAQ page: http://textpattern.com/faq/ There, the categories are listed under the “FAQ” section, for example “Acquisition and Installation”. The only thing there I would not need is the number of articles associated with a category.

Check the resources site (link at top of page), look in the section/category and archive plugins.

Mary, I looked through both sections of the resources site and I foound only one plugin that was what I was looking for: <url>cbs_category_list </url> by Christophe Beyls.
It outputs the categories under a given section, so if we are in “News” section and there are 2 categories within “News” called “world” and “europe” both will display, so long as there are articles within that category.
Unfortunately the number of articles associated with the category also display, which is not what we want with this particular site. Anyone have an idea of how to achieve this?

On a semi-related note. Let’s say I have two Categories, News and England, and I want to display a list of all the articles that are in both News and England.
Is this possible?

Read the documentation that accompanies a plugin to understand how to use it. That one apparently does not allow turning that post number off. You overlooked two plugins, rss_suparchive_bycat and fh_category_list.
tentaizu: not with categories (not yet anyway). You’ll likely want to make use of custom fields and/or keywords. Currently there is a limit of 2 categories, 10 custom fields, and keywords are only limited by the number of characters that field can hold: 255, which could contain quite a number of tags. Check the TextBook for more details on where you can define these and also the tags you’ll need to output what you want.

Hi Mary, thanks for the reply.
I did not forget fh_category_list – this one I installed to test and it did not work, despite installing it for a second time. Nothing displayed so I assume there was a bug. Its not clear if the plugin is designed to go in a form or the page. I put it in the page, so I could have tripped up there.
The rss_suparchive_bycat is for listing articles under a category. Not what I am looking for – I need a simple link list that is section sensitive.

Its quite sad there is no simple way to list a list of categories that fall under a section. This is one way that many people will want to structure their sites.
Tentaizu, I would think that rss_suparchive_bycat will do what you want, with a little tweaking.

It is something needed I think. The toughest part of TXP seems to be figuring out site structures, especially when adapting a client’s current siite. TXP is such a beautiful thing in the way it works and its flexibility, adding the ability to show categories would help, although the idea if having categories available site wide also makes sense.
