Re: mysql migration dreamhost

>>Michael, how do you copy tables.

Matthew,

Disclaimer: Nothing authorative here, just grist for the mill, as I’m still learning TXP.

Have you seen this?

Looks like its an in progress doc.

To upload the tables to your new install in phpMyAdmin go to the SQL tab and then browse to your SQL file (yr dump from the previous install). You would need to make sure you emptied the database first, ie drop tables (back up first).

I haven’t moved to a new host myself but the problems I would anticipate would have to do with configuration issues (ie the config data stored in yr old database won’t match the new. Possibly you could go into the sql file and manually change that). It looks like the tutorial on textbook covers most of that. Looks kinda hairy to me.

It might be easier to just copy your template and form pages and start over with creating new sections and categories and then copy and past the articles, depending on how many you have.

I would think that someone on these forums could tell you which tables contain the config data and you could leave those untouched, only importing the tables that contain your content and templates/forms but then I’m learning too.

BTW, welcome to Dreamhost. They rock. I’ve been a customer since 2000 and the cost has “gasp” gone down in price over the years.

Re: mysql migration dreamhost

Neutrino,
Thanks. I tried to make it through that textbook tutorial to no avail. I got lost. I’m a learn as you see kinda guy, or in this case, learn as you fail :).

I may end up doing things manually – as you’ve suggested, but I would really like to learn this stuff at some point.

Cheers for your help,

Matthew

Re: mysql migration dreamhost

I ended up taking one table over at a time. First I did a fresh install, but put kept my images folder intact. I couldn’t figure out how to import to replace the original file in the destination host so I dropped the tables on the destination host. Exported one table at at time from host of origin, imported one table at a time into the destination host. In the end, everything transferred well. I left some of the discuss tables, and the log tables, as those weren’t important to me at this point. I am still in testing phases. I did have to go through PhpMyAdmin and redo my password to be able to get into the txp interface, and the textbook proved helpful there.

I don’t quite understand why migrating the entire db wouldn’t work?

I don’t know if this is an unstable or less than perfect way to do this, but thus far, it seems to work well.

Hope it helps anyone who searches this thread.
