Structure my site with categories, sections & pages?

I’m slowly learning textpattern, moving from MovableType. It’s the site structure under Txp that i’m having trouble with. Because there are no pages per se (only mostly relation between elements that build pages – am I right?), it’s unclear what I should build and how I should do it.

Here the setup: I am building a comic strip site.<br />
- The front page must display the last comic (only the last one) and also the website’s ‘recent news’.<br />
- Each comic must have it’s own page (with it’s own comments) and will belong to multiple categories.<br />
- I would also like a categories page (this is mostly what i’m having trouble with) that displays the titles and excerpts of all the comic stips belonging to that category. By clicking the title you are obviously brought to that comic’s page.

How many sections & pages do I need to do this? Which section does the default layout belong to?

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Re: Structure my site with categories, sections & pages?

Ouf of your description (+ the frontpage), I would propose 1 single section for your comics (other sections could be Contact, About…)
The frontpage would display the last article and some links to your “Comics” section and to categories within that section
To display what you want on the frontpage and the main section page, you’ll have to use 2 pages (templates) some different forms for your articles (list or full article) and probably a few conditionnal tags.

My site is made that way (sory it’s in french ;) )

On the front page you have a random article on the top and a list of the last articles (you coud display the whole last one instead of a list).
On the top-left of the font-page (and all the pages in fact as it is a reusable form) there is the menu with the link to the complete section page with no category (“les plus récentes”), and to categories (“Créations” “diverses” “Bédé” …) which are in fact in the same page (section) of the site : it is just sorted by category from the database using a link like : /comics/?c=funny-comics (that means “show me only the funny comics category in the comic section, please, gentle Textpattern”.

That’s all ! :-)

Re: Structure my site with categories, sections & pages?

Ok, i’ve been off this project for a few weeks, back on track now. Thanks for your reply Niconemo. But I still don’t understand where to link (and how to display the page) for the archive list.

I had to clear it up in my mind as well:
<a href=“http://www.hippopocampe.org/agnusday_setup.gif”>www.hippopocampe.org/agnusday_setup.gif</a>

FOR THE FRONTPAGE:
News section is linked to it. ‘Article custom’ tag displays the last comic.

INDIVIDUAL:
Comic section. Linked to ‘Single-article’ page.

ARCHIVES LIST (all categories, all posts):
Here, Please help. Sometimes, textpattern makes me feel dumb (and numb maybe too). It seemed so easy in Movable Type. This template will be also the same one for each ‘Articles-related-to-that-category Page’ as well.
