Create lists of links arranged by category and subcategory

Hi,

I would like to create a list of links structured by category and subcategory. Ideally I would like to use a similar structure as for my articles. I thought I could somehow do it with stw_category_tree, but TXP only allows one category entry for links, not two like for articles. Any hope for me?

Not yet. TXP actually does allow sub-categories for links, images and files however, at the moment, I’m not aware that there is a way of using the sub-categories to sort on. I believe that may be something for the future.

Bummer. It would be great if articles and links were handled similarly.

I’m not sure what you mean? There is only one field for entering a category for links – if I enter a subcategory I can’t seem to have a list recognize the parent category.

If you go to the “Organise” tab then click on one of your category names you will come to a page you probably didn’t know exists. It’s a bit like finding “secrets” in games this is. ;)

Re: Create lists of links arranged by category and subcategory

I have a few links in the txp link section that appear in a sidebar but for my main links area (about 250 links), I put them in articles. The main reason for doing this is that the search doesn’t seem to find my links if they are in the regular txp link section.

I put the title under “title” as the sort value. I put the link and a description in the body (justblogit does this automatically so I stayed with that format, but there would be other fields you could use, excerpt for the description, etc.). I sort by title but just display the body. It may not work for every site, depending on how forms are set up, and how categories are organized — on my site I want the link categories to be the same as the article categories. I don’t have any sub-categories yet, but plan to soon. http://www.childadvocacy.com/links

Oh, I see what you mean. Yes, I am aware of that and have defined categories and subcategories for my links and articles. For my articles I can enter the category in cat1 and the subcategory in cat2. With links, there is only one category field. If I enter the category info, the subcategory info isn’t stored. If I enter the subcategory I still can’t create lists of links by category and subcategory as far as I can tell.

Trailgirl, I really like how you have these set up – great workaround! And bonus that searching works better. So your links are basically articles, but they are in a separate “links” section. I also want my link categories/subcategories to be the same as the article categories. I think that your system will probably work for what I need. Plus it makes it a bit easier for me to recycle my forms. Super!!!!

I absolutely cannot imagine trying to set up my site without this forum :-D.

Re: Create lists of links arranged by category and subcategory

That was an incredibly intelligent work around, trailgirl. I’ve been running this through my head for months on a creative way to do this, and you’ve provided it. Thanks!

By the way, doesn’t it seem interesting that you have link categories, but not an easy way to display those categories? Seems like you should be able to use the same methods as you do with article categories. Unless I’m missing something.

Re: Create lists of links arranged by category and subcategory

Sunnyd,
You can choose link categories

see here

You would include it in your linklist tag like this:

<code><txp:linklist category=“my-links-about-textpattern” /></code>

Is that what you were wondering?

Matthew
