I’ll check this one out but personnally the only one that would compete with PunBB is UNB It’s powerful, well built and has nice features :
* Native real-time Jabber IM notification on new posts * access rights management with an Access Control List * Real unread posts selection, without cookies * Full Unicode support, multiple designs and languages …..: Retired :.

Does anyone know of an open source forum software which can be used for a private forum? ie members by invitation only and posts only visible to members.

Any of the forum software uses “permissions”. I’m not sure of “members by invitation”, but once registered you can certainly make it inaccessible to the outside world.

they should do a better job of showing the guest account … there’s nothing about it on the community index page… this was the email i sent along with my “application” in the field marked “why do you want to join this community”
um, because you told me there’s a world of functionality i’m not seeing if i’m not registered. why is there this obstacle to seeing it? i’m trying to check out your forum software….. oh and now you’ve e-yelled at me for not clicking the terms of service… do you realize the potential effects of this on prospective adopters of your product?
anyway now i’ll go seek out this guest account so i can try this thing

hey actually this thing is pretty cool…. but i already spent a whole 20 minutes making my punbb install look right with my site template!
i may switch anyway… we shall see

bbpress, http://bbpress.org is starting to be quite stable…for an alpha. Love the total simplicity on it.
Other very light & fast to install and easy to customize is ReynosaBB, http://www.reynosabb.com
