Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

AroundMe and Elgg are under GNU/GPL, checked it in the licence files contained in both distros.

For more info about Elgg, check the application’s website, rather than the hosted version linked by Anark.

You’re an animal David, I predict you’ll have 10 employees in two years time. Anyway, yet another system I need to explore now. Easy on TextDrive you say? Bon.

Yeah well, I like to seek new stuff :D (Had I the skill to do so, I’ll write something myself !)
That’s how I found textpattern… instantly knew there was something there.

About the ten employees in 2 years, I don’t know !
Remember I live in France, not the US ;P

10 employees would mean quite some cash : if I wanna pay someone 3000 euros, it’ll cost me almost 6000…

But more importantly, France is the country of the establishment : if you’re out of it (not from the Grandes Ecoles and their powerful business networks)… it’s hard to have the system “move” and change here, even if you have ideas and energy…

I am trying to make a living out of it for myself, which would be nice already :)
Anyway, thanks for the vote of confidence !

Yeah, no problem installing it.
If you want to take a peak at AroundMe, the demo is fine :)

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

Looking for yet another opensource social software, I discovered this page is ranked first on Google for “opensource social software”…

Funny !

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

Yeah few people seem to take interrest in this, it seems… aside from hosted services, not much software to toy with !
Maybe it’s me but I’d rather create a community myself, maybe more focused on a particular topic

IMHO, one of the weakness of Orkut or Y!360 is that they try to be all encompassing. It’s not readable and becomes far too cluttered for my taste. I truly believe in the future of these apps, but not the way they’re used today.

Ideas like those of meetup.com or pledgebank will certainly enrich social software apps. We need to enrich them with meaning and avoid the featuritis pitfall

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

So did anybody end up using this thing on a website of theirs? It looks pretty cool but I don’t think I have much of a need for social networking software so I would like to see some applications of it.

Their wiki has a nice look to it too.

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

I am currently building a website with it for a network of health institutions. I don’t think I will be able to give access to it given the privacy required by this project which is more of an extranet than a website per say…

Anyway, you should check out Igloo though… Tom will rebuild aroundme from the igloo code, which is greatly improving standards compliancy (going tableless…) and also has a clearer interface. I’ll keep you posted on this :)

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

Beware that Igloo is still in alpha stage… somewhat buggy for the time being… But then again, there are no real competitor there…

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

I’ve been testing Aroundme on my own for almost a year, and I think it shows a lot of potential.

Some downsides I’ve noticed:
1. The many language files are a little frustrating.
2. At this point, there are still too many bugs for my liking.

I wasn’t aware of elgg, but I like what I’ve seen so far…
