Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

The plugin is designed to end the excerpt at the end of a paragraph, so an ellipses seems a little inappropriate. You can just direct someone to the remainder of the article with a permalink and not have to denote the continuation of the article with an ellipses at the end of a paragraph (which would probably be the end of a sentence).

Ok, I just read over you entry again. Am I correct in understanding that you would like to specify the number of paragraphs to use regardless of how much text is in them? This is definately something that I could do, but I’m not sure how many people will need such a feature. However, if I’m correct in understanding what you want, I’ll try to find some time to make the modification to provide this feature.

Aye that’s it. But as I said I found a compromise that sort of works, so I’ll just make sure users don’t exceed the 2.5line rule. Sorry if I got you to add ellipses, I was just trying to figure out why it kept cutting off.

philippashlok,

<cite>I could offer the ability to use a word count rather than a character count to determine the excerpt length though. If this is desired, please let me know.</cite>

I am looking for just this

I would echo the desirability of having a word count option…

Thanks

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

doesn’t safe page excerpt do something similar? I was thinking more it detects (if that’s the right word) where the first p starts and the closing p ends ignoring the actual word count

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

Would it be possible to not wrap the excerpt in a p tag if the excerpt has been manually entered and has a p already. As it is, if I add text to the excerpt I end up with the following generated by pfa_beginning:

<code>
<p> <p>manually entered excerpt</p> </p>
</code>

Notice the extraneous p tags. Not exactly valid.

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

why not remove the manually added p tags? I would like the excerpt to be generate with p tags so I don’t have to. In what situation would you manually need to add the p tags?

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

Love the plugin —- very simple to use. While I had some concern since I had no clue what the txp:beginning tag would do, I now realize how easy this is!

Thanks!

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

The p tags are automatically entered via textile in textpattern.

hmm I’m not sure I understand. I have textile enabled and I use the plugin but I haven’t had the p tags duplicated.

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

Here is how I do it:

I enter the content in the article body. Then a copy a part of a paragraph into the excerpt where textile wraps it with a p tag. Then bam double p tags when published. I think textile was added to the excerpt only in the later versions of textpattern.

I have gotten around this by turning off textile in excerpts sitewide through a plugin called upm_textile_excerpt comment #7

but I would like pfa_beginning to strip tags out of the excerpt.

tinyfly: I updated the plugin and removed the extraneous tags.

You can re-download the file

Re: Plugin: pfa_beginning - excerpt generation based on length attribute

ah makes sense now – i don’t use an excerpt plugin, just one of those auto generate exceprts that take the first few words and autogenerate the excerpt. er, i mean this plugin :)

your way is probably better for precision and management, but I guess that makes me lazy :)
