Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
A while back I discovered the excellent X-Standard WYSIWYG editor.
Up to then I’d been disappointed with the quality of code produced by WYSIWYG editors, but the X-Standard editor produces clean XHTML and integrates well with CSS.
I like working with Textpattern but some clients have not been so keen as they couldn’t/wouldn’t use Textile and wanted WYSIWYG as offered by other CMSs.
So I thought I’d have a crack at integrating X-Standard into Textpattern. It took 30mins to do and wasn’t difficult.
In case anyone else finds this useful I’ve posted how on my website at www.simonwakeman.com
It’s not pretty, nor elegant, nor automated, but if someone finds it useful with demanding clients then it’s worth sharing.
cheers
sw

Hey Simon,
Good to hear from you again. I hand out your quick reference guide frequently. I was thinking about this just a few weeks ago. I was wondering if you could put a screenshot with your “quick and dirty” guide. I would like to see the finished result.

Re: Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
I’ve tested this on the latest revision (r370)RC3 and works like a charm.I think that this is the ultimate solution for a more user friendly env.
Note: Im on Firefox 1.04 ,I’ll get baack later to do a testrun on all my browsers.
Unfotunatelly micampes plugin didn’t work out for me,so I think that this just comes to the rescue.
Downside, that it doesn’t work on older browser vers, which is bad for greece, but you can’t have everything of course.
Many thanks for sharing, Simon,I’ll do some more testing later and get back ASAP.
regards, marios

Re: Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
BTW nI used it with the freeware version, which gives some limited choices,no header tags and so on.
Does it do it allso with the extended commercial version ?

Re: Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
thanks for the feedback
i have uploaded a screenshot of the editor in place
i have only used it with the free version, but i don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work with the paid-for version as well – there are more parameters that can be set in the same way as I set the CSS parameter on my install
would be interested to hear some feedback on the extended version as it looks very good, but we’ve never had a client who actually needs the functionality it has

hi wakemans,
not to put you on the spot, but how do you feel this compares to TinyMCE WYSIWYG edior for TXP? Or do you feel they both serve the same purpose but to different audiences?

Re: Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
Simon,
That looks good. It really integrated nicely into the txp admin interface. I wonder if there is a way to implement this without hacking on the source code, through the new admin plugin options? I will have to play with this some. I don’t know if you have played with upm_quicktags or not. It also integrates nicely and has one nice feature of button image and xhtml tag customization, however it is not WYSIWYG until you hit the view output tab.

Re: Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
I wen’t through the documentation today and found something that actually hasn’t been mentioned on the frontpage of their site.
The fact that the application relies on activeX controls in combination with C++ is frightening me.
The configuration steps for custumization (like HEX encoding additional buttons) are allso quite complex.
I am reconsidering this.
The surplus here though is you can I18n this to your language if needed.
Does not work on netscape 6 and 7,Opera 7 and 8.
P.S.:
that’s mentioned on their site as well:
<cite>
XStandard is written in C++ with a Mozilla/Firefox plug-in API and an ActiveX wrapper. It runs natively in IE 5+, Firefox 1+, Mozilla 1.7.5+, Netscape 8.0+ and many Windows development environments like Visual Basic, Visual C++, Delphi, FoxPro, Access, etc.
</cite>
Allso each time you have to assign a specific browser to use the app, so question is:would it work after auser did upgrade their browser?

Re: Installing XStandard WYSIWYG editor in Textpattern
Is there a possibility to integrate this editor as admin plugin?

I would also be interested in it as an admin plugin.
