Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

I have recently been requested by a client to find an open-source social software application, and to my surprise I didn’t find much apps. More specifically, just found one called AroundMe

It’s from the barnraiser foundation, and to give you an outlook :

<blockquote>‘aroundme’ has three central components, social network, groupware, activities and task management- true social networking and team interaction software.

Flexible configuration for member options
You can configure aroundme for any number of membership options ranging from open social networking where members can view all members to a closed membership which members cannot see each other.

Membership tools
Each members gets their own messaging service, Blog (a web based journal), library (like a personal web site), profile, file library, favourites, guestbook and statistics tools.

Group tools
Groups include their own file library, document library, forum, polls and membership management options. Each group is fully configurable ranging from an open membership to a closed and hidden group.

Event and activity tools
Each member and group has a calendar and daily schedule. Events and activities (or projects and tasks) can be published and allocated to members of the team.</blockquote>

If you know of any similar apps, I’d be glad to know :)

This looks useful to me as I begin to relaunch zuiker.com for my extended family. I’ll be interested to learn about other, similar social networking solutions.

Anyone finds this interresting ? Or has some similar app to share ?

I think this thing is the next step for community CMS… look at the roadmap, it’s quite groundbreaking. The Skill Finder (aka ELS or expertise location system), the network mapper are usually KM tools for the rich companies ;-)

Had a quick look at it, and it looks very impressive. I have to set aside some time for a closer look at it.

http://egroupware.org/

More of a group colloboration system, but they have some of the features you outlined above. Not sure if it really suits what you want though…

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

arpan, Tom (the developper) has answered my mail, seems a nice guy. Extreme programming is also a nice concept. Apparently version 0.5.0 should be out next week :)

edburdo, I know egroupware, very nice tool but quite different. Other worthy groupware : phpCollab. Of course, I’d dream of an OS Basecamp stand alone distro… or a french translation, can’t offer my clients this great tool since it’s english only…

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

Well, no. I installed a 0.4 locally on Windows with EasyPHP. I’ll wait the release of the new improved version to install this, or ask Tom help with local install on Windows (<del>yeah, the sendmail function can’t work obviously, since there’s no mail server installed on WinXP</del>…). <del>Or I’ll install this local on Linux.</del> <font color=”#666666”>Edit : OK, just plain dumb of me, you just have to edit your php.ini config for sendmail… this is fixed thx to Tom.</font>

But it seems fairly straightforward. Just as any PHP/MySQL CMS :-)

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

OK mistersugar, I confirm I have installed aroundme 0.5.0 succesfully on TextDrive : a real breeze, no particular suggestion

I also have tested it extensively, and went through the code, it’s very clean and well built. And also : this is the only existing opensource social software

I like it so much I am translating it to french :)
First time I have such a crush on this app since TXP ;)

Re: Aroundme : a promising opensource social software

Cool, I’ll test this !
Thx very much Anark for this pointer :)

Just like AroundMe, didn’t came out of my googling hunt… sometimes gems are hidden ! I’ll test and report :-)

<font color=”#666666”>Edit : Did a little bit of testing, Elgg is much lighter than AroundMe, and the local install gave me a lot of errors (maybe my server config). I didn’t like that it could only be installed at the root of your server, for local testing this is a mess… </font>
