Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

Yes, two biggest players on the design tools market are going to merge into the one company . It will be interesting to watch what they come up with. Are their products going to improve even more?

I use both Photoshop and Fireworks. Both are top tools. I wonder if they merge the two and create a new bitmap/vector editor.

It’s almost as exciting as TXP v1.0 release or the new Radiohead album ;)

Re: Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

Yes, by all means, let’s combine them, because Photoshop needs some more bloat added to it.

I’ve been using Fireworks since the 1.0 beta, and it is the fate of this program that concerns me most about this merger. The conflicts are pretty clear, as are the “winners”; Flash trumps LiveMotion, Dreamweaver stomps GoLive, and Illustrator tops Freehand.

What are the odds of Fireworks surviving the Photoshop/ImageReady competition? About the same as Nader winning in 2008, I’d say. And that’s a real shame.

Re: Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

Here is hoping they keep there products seperate. I love photoshop for image manipulation, Indesign for publishing, Illustrator for drawing, Fireworks for web layouts etc – I pick and choose between both companies.

We should all cross our fingers and hope that this doesn’t lead to a lack of diversity and innovation in their products.

Re: Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

what worries me is adobe’s ‘war’ with apple. They already discontinued premiere for the mac platform and they released their dvd authoring program just for pc.

Would this mean that this merger would create another super company (think microsoft) which mostly caters for the pc world?

As long as there was a competition with macromedia (dreamweaver V golive, imageready V fireworks etc), there was hope for cross platform compatibility at least for those products.

I don’t really care for the future of either company. I invested a lot of time and money on the mac platform and this is what I care about. In the end it is how the merger will affect the end user.

I am also concerned for FireWorks because I love it and use it… It goes to the essentials way more efficiently than Image Ready.

I am not sure this is a very good news altogether… time to switch to a GIMP/Sodipodi tandem ? Or maybe to Mac ?

Pfff….

Re: Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

after using Photoshop, I found FireWorks to be much more user friendly and more powerful, especially with all those automated little tasks. also, the aesthetics of the FireWorks interface have always appealed to me over Photoshop. Hopefully when these two companies merge, the product lines will continue as planned (though Adobe FireWorks just doesn’t sound nearly as cool).

however, I do think Adobe made an extremely smart decision here. while they have a very strong line of products for movie editing (Premiere, After Effects) and page layout (InDesign), and the seeming preferred option for professional graphic design, their internet-related line of products has been lacking, and that is the field which has been growing quickly. and their brand could do with some new style and flair.

Hopefully this doesn’t mean another Microsoft. Lack of competition = worse products? I bet the next big thing is merging of the Adobe, Google and Microsoft.. ;)

Re: Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

I think fireworks should replace “imageready”. I’ve never seen anybody use imageready!

Re: Adobe and Macromedia to merge!

I have never used Fireworks. Only Imageready. And saying that Dreamweaver is better than GoLive is only that persons own individual opinion. GoLive is IMO better than Dreamweaver. I use Dreamweaver at school though…

So…

But anyway, the best thing about this merger is that HOPEFULLY Flash will become a more intuitive application!

Macromedia are IMO so bad at interface design. Adobe apps are IMO much more intuitive.

And I don’t think you should worry about the individual products for now. Adobe needs a “competitor” and Macromedia is a strong brand, so they probably won’t kill it for now.

In marketing it’s not always bad to have competition. That leaves the consumer a feeling of “having a choice” and if Adobe was the only major player, they would leave the door open for competitors. If Adobe owns their closest competitor, the money ends in the same pocket in the end anyway.

Reid, your website needs less bloat;-)

Have a look at USEIT.COM – and spend a few hours there;-)
