low_nav
A slight modification of zem’s work
What this does is to create prev/next links within a category, rather than a section.
At this point (0.1), it only works with Category1, but that might be changed in future revisions.
Download here, documentation is within.
Credit must go to zem, for the bulk of the code is his. Any bugs in my modification are entirely my fault (though you use this at your own risk). ;)

Darn! Before I redid how my portfolio works, I was desperate for a plugin that did this! Might have to change it back again…

Plugin was made (modified, rather), so that I could have my photo gallery sorted by categories. :)
Just using Category1 works for me, but I plan to improve the plugin by revising it to use Category2 as well. That should come shortly, at least once I finish unpacking (just got home from a trip to Melaka).
By the way, the code to find an article’s “neighbor” is from the Textpattern install with slight adjustments.
Jon: thanks for linking me. Also try viewing the photos under ‘Friends’—landscape orientation. :)

justin – thank you for this – I can’t believe your timing. I am just completing a project that needs this – I had put it on the list of things to investigate – so I go looking on the forum – and you’ve just posted the solution!

Just spent a couple of hours doing EXACTLY this (slaughtering Zems plugins to achive categorynavigation).
Serves me right for not scouring the forums properly.
Instead of conquering the world, I’m collecting it in my attic.

Uhh, the current zem_nav release supports both categories and sections.

zem: The problem (or if it was one of them…my memory is getting worse by the year) was that although zem_nav would link correctly to the next item within the category/section it did not create a link in such a way that the category would be carried “over” to the next page. This in order to be able to browse next/previous within the same category.
Most of my entries have several categories so it was vital for me to know which of the categories the user was browsing by.
I am also using your link and rewrite plugins (great plugins all of them b.t.w.I simply love your stuff) and I achieved what I wanted with simple hack’n slashes in zem_nav & zem_link by adding another argument (or what do they call them? Attributes?) to txp:zem_link_to_next and zem_link_to_prev that dictated if the current category used should be written to the link or not.
I think it was something like that at least. Oh well…
