Whats the deal with OsCommerce anyway? Looks like they haven’t released a new version for almost 2 years.

It’s not a bad package, it’s just suffering a lot because the development is backed up to buggery. There aren’t many people on the core team I don’t think. Poor old hpdl must be struggling a bit.
I don’t know what the next release will bring, I keep hearing things about xhtml/css but I doubt it personally. They’ve done a lot of work on the admin interface (good job too) that I saw a couple months back in the CVS version, but the catalog hasn’t budged a bit as far as I could tell. The main problem with it is the difficulty of restyling it, and that some of the stuff in there is bad…
I just want to have a little shop on the backend of txp now!! Although I’m off to install eZ3.5 again to try once more to make that work… it’s slow though…

Harold, the developer of osCommerce (hpdl) seems to be rather … ehm … It’s like he is very very disappointed that some of the core developers left the project and started the main fork, Zen Cart, and his enthusiasm does not seem to get better now that Sparky, the next-most important developer left, left the project, because he got a real job… Messy situation…

Deadlines have been pushed so many timesw that Harold has don’t even wan’t to give any kind of estimates on the schedule… My own POV is that osCommerce suffers from bloated code, same situation as with phpNuke and the clones… Almost impossible to clean up, and once cleaned up, all the various contributions / modules, will not work at all.
It’s the opposite of a win/win situation… Better to just start from scratch and create something clean, beautiful, and modern…. Like TXP;-)

50 MB upload. Though a lot of the stuff can be removed later, as it’s not needed. ezP is powerful but daunting…
Inded a nice little shop in the back of TXP would be sheer power and joy;-)
Maybe Zem could manifest his new position as core developer by doing the job;-)

hello all. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck finding a good ecommerce system? I have also tried oscommerce and zencart and found them to much and to hard to skin.
I want to sell a few products (less than 10) so i only need the basics – a list of products with descriptions and price, with a buy now or add to cart button.
I am thinking of building my own system, i have a good tutorial about building a simple (very simple) cart from Macromedia which is great. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other tutorials?

Hi Kris,
I’ve still not found anything that is as easy as I’d ideally like.
The option of building my own simple cart is becoming ever more appealing, although I am still considering the PayPal shopping cart.

Yeah, if all you have is a few items at a set price, Paypal is the easy way to go; it’s already setup and secure, no hassle. You do have to qualify for a business-grade account with Paypal though, which isn’t too tough. On the other hand if you have nothing but time and like reinventing the wheel, then by all means. I’m sure someone would find it useful if you offered it up.
Where one might decide to go with something other than Paypal, as I see it, is if you have a small catalog of items you are selling, in which case you would probably want more control over the presentation of them.

Which is a VERY nice shopping cart – and simple! – although somehow stalled development (but a GREAT framework for modifications!!!) and their forum is still breathing!

This is something that would greatly benefit a broader appeal for txp. I think a plugin “ransom” would be paid off in days if not hours for a plugin that would serve as a simple txp tag.
ie:
txp_zem_cart wraptag=div
hint hint
