Possible macOS/Safari 26.5.2 bug - checkbox toggle with sidebar shown

I’m investigating a possible bug with Safari 26.5.2 and toggling checkboxes in the admin-side. For some reason, I cannot toggle any admin-side checkboxes with a mouse when the Safari sidebar is visible. The cursor stays as an arrow (i.e. it does not change to a hand-with-finger).

If you’re running Safari on macOS Tahoe 26.5.2 anywhere, I’d be grateful if you could sanity check the following, please:

i) open a Textpattern 4.9.1 admin-side instance in Safari 26.5.2
ii) ensure the sidebar is NOT visible
iii) confirm checkboxes can be toggled with a mouse / trackpad click
iv) switch the sidebar to visible, and DO NOT reload the page
v) check whether checkboxes can be toggled
vi) now reload the page
vii) check whether checkboxes can be toggled

I have an element of snow blindness after a challenging week, so I would appreciate some capable & sane eyes on this.

Thank you.

Also reproducible on Safari Tech Preview [Release 247 (WebKit 22625.1.22.19.1)].

Not sure if it’s useful or adds credence to your findings that it’s a Safari/OS bug, but it seems to work as expected in 26.5.2 under macOS Sequoia 15.7.7. Checkboxes remain togglable before, during and after showing the sidebar and reloading the page (via keyboard and trackpad).

Looks like a rendering / alignment glitch – checkboxes are toggle-able a few pixels to the right:

Thanks, Bloke. I’ll investigate further.

Freaky! Yeah, defo looks like some Safari alignment issue, but we could be absolutely sure by seeing if it exhibits the same behaviour on any other website that has checkboxes down the left hand edge.

Probably one of bazillion SwiftUI layout bug in macOS 26.x.

I cannot seem to reproduce that with iPadOS26 (and Sandspace, no Hive available), and we only have macOS14 &15 where the issue is not present.

Thanks, phiw13 – you’re right. It seems to be limited to one of my computers, so I’ll chalk it up to another one of Tahoe’s eye-roller ‘enhancements’.

FWIW: I just upgraded for you but can’t reproduce it following your instructions.

Do you have any browser extension active? Does disable that / those help any?

Other things to try, in no particular order:

  • sightly resize the browser window (forcing it to recalculate the browser chrome geometry, and thus the page layout)
  • hide the window (Cmd-M) and call it backup (from the window menu), forcing a repaint
  • ultimate: quit browser and restart

Sometimes I’ve seen the following: two-finger click / right click a link and choose open in new tab, after that hovering over links does not show the expected cursor change, url in status bar, etc. forcing a repaint on the browser window, active tab solves the problem.

Hehe. No worries, I was on Tahoe already, just hadn’t upgraded to the 26.5.2 release. Still Golden Gate looks set to right some of Tahoe’s iresome wrongs.

I was going to ask the same as Philippe: Do you have any extensions or maybe system-wide user-css set (AdGuard has that option, for example).

Yes. And no, unfortunately. I’m using 1Password for Safari (via App Store) and Adguard Assistant (via vendor). My MacBook Air running Tahoe 26.5.2 is unaffected by this glitch, and the machine builds are as close to identical as possible.

All good ideas, unfortunately none of them affected the outcome. It survives multiple reboots, too…so it’s relatively easy to reproduce locally, if we’re looking for any kind of silver lining.

Workaround is to hide the browser sidebar, and it’s all fine – I can live with that.

I’ve set up a new Mac mini with a 32” Dell S3225QS, which at native 2160p resolution has given me rather more horizontal real estate than a 27” Dell P2715Q in portrait mode running at 1440p. I’m of an age now where 2160p (aka 4K) on a 27” is too ‘small’ for my eyes, and I am choosing to compromise less on my own wellbeing.

I really hope so. I’ve had to turn off Music.app software EQ because it consistently removes the opening second-ish of audio, which for someone who listens to a lot of electronic music is beyond irritating. Known issue, apparently.

Yes to AdGuard, but disabling / removing doesn’t seem to affect it, and AdGuard is present on my MacBook Air running 26.5.2…so it’s a conundrum. I’m inclined to chalk it up to Tahoe weirdness (not the first time I’ve said that in the last 9 months).
