Wordpress 7.0 'Armstrong': AI baked in

wordpress.org/news/2026/05/armstrong/

WordPress 7.0 marks the start of a new era, laying the foundation for AI across the WordPress experience.

I’m pleased there are options for folk who lean into AI slop, and I’m even more pleased that Textpattern isn’t one of those options.

*shivers*

I had a client ask me if AI was going be integrated into Txp core. I said no.

Plugins, sure, be my guest. If people want a tool that will yomp through your images and add alt tags based on what it thinks the content of the image is, that potentially adds value. Even if it’s not 100% right, it’s a step up from nothing.

Or if they want something that will automatically summarize content to add SEO meta descriptions to articles, well, why not. The results will be sloppish and the same as everyone else in the industry (because that’s where it stole all the data to train the LLM from) but if your site has nothing or very little metadata, it’s a starting point.

However, rather than develop a plugin, you might as well just create a Txp account for ClaudeAI and tell it to iterate your articles, read the content (stripping out textile and/or html), summarize it in under 255 chars and update the article’s metadata field. Then pray it doesn’t delete everything, apologize, and disavow any wrongdoing.

Back to WordPress, this is a pretty good pre-AI summary of where things went wrong.

I have the unfortunate situation where I’ve inherited some WP sites. The inside of my head dies a little more every time I log in and try to get anything done. I’m not looking forward to when 7.0 is forced upon me.

The smd plugin menagerie — for when you need one more gribble of power from Textpattern. Bleeding-edge code available on GitHub.

Re: Wordpress 7.0 'Armstrong': AI baked in

Gutenberg introduced this “Full Site Editing” thing, and it’s a mess. I hate it. I gave it a try, and I still have a few sites using FSE because I hoped it would make things more accessible for content editors. Instead, it’s overly complex and requires hacks for simple tasks. At some point, I’ll have to rebuild those themes because of it. That said, as a content editor, Gutenberg is excellent. Users can create content as easily as possible, and the generated HTML is clean.

I think AI follows a similar line of reasoning. AI is an incredible tool, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be in every part of wp I look at. It all comes down to how these things are implemented. The lack of it can also be a problem.
