RFC: add some 'in-but-off-by-default' list column options

Could we consider adding some more column options for content types? Specifically the list views for each type of content, and making them available but disabled? Perhaps as an advanced pref?

Disclosure: I’ve gone back and forth on this over the past days, and there could be some selection bias here as it’s possibly more useful for seasoned users that use hacks to repurpose content fields / attributes for other purposes.

I’m using a lot of links on my current site build, and I’m finding / making ways to get best use of the existing fields. By default, a link’s sort value matches its title. I’m using a numerical sort value (e.g. 10, 20, 30 etc) to force links into a given order. So far, so good. When I want to insert a link into a particular place in the linklist, I set the sort value to a number between its upper and lower neighbours, and – presto – it works as expected.

The UX snag is that there’s no current way (to the best of my knowledge) to show the sort value on the links page. I can cheerfully disable any stuff that’s not important to me (e.g. timestamp), and I can sort of hack the view by duplicating the sort value into the description so I can see at a glance…but that means I can’t use the description field, and I’m already using that for an SVG-related hack to assign a link image (see above re: seasoned users using hacks to repurpose content fields).

I can see benefits in giving power users and / or those with more complex sites more list view visibility on the also-ran content fields if they choose to enable that, with a nod toward the general aim of keeping the UI clean & clear.

Thank you.

Thing is, there’s no real hardship in exposing the columns anyway for all users. Anyone who doesn’t want to see them can just hide the column(s).

So if there are particular columns in any panels you think would be beneficial to show, we could add them.

I like the idea, as well as the possibility to show custom fields and change the order of the columns 🫣

I’d love to be able to reorder the columns sometimes but can’t think of a neat way to do it.
