Duplicate standard theme

To prevent unnecessary errors, I have a question about the best way to copy the default theme and make it work. Can I copy the default theme and make it the default for my website, then assign all sections to this theme, and link all pages and forms to it? Are these the only steps I need to take, or are there other things I should consider?

Re: Duplicate standard theme

Yes.

  1. Duplicate the theme. Give it a name / version that’s easy to distinguish.
  2. Click Assign Sections against the new theme.
  3. (Easiest) Select all sections.
  4. From the multi edit tool beneath the list, choose Change theme/page/style.
  5. Ensure Development only is ticked, the theme in the drop-down is the new one. And the page + style drop-downs are both ‘*’ (aka “use the same assets”).
  6. Confirm.

That will create you development lanes for all sections. As long as you’re careful to edit the development theme (double check the theme drop-down on the Pages, Forms and Styles panels, which is why it helps to give your new theme a distinct name) then whatever changes you make are only visible to you when you’re logged in.

When you’re happy with the changes:

  1. Select all sections from the Sections panel.
  2. Choose Developer Preview -> Deploy To Live from the multi edit drop-down.
  3. Confirm.

You’re then free to delete your old theme (the one with no assets now assigned to it)
