Statistics for Textpattern 4.9.0 downloads from .com
Textpattern 4.9.0 was the first production release of Textpattern to include a .tar.xz archive in addition to the usual .zip and .tar.gz archives. The main advantage / benefit of the .tar.xz archive is a considerable reduction in size: ~2.32MB for the .tar.xz archive vs ~3.59MB for the .tar.gz vs ~3.92MB for the .zip archive. That’s a considerable saving in bytes-through-the-pipes, especially on a slower connection.
Textpattern 4.9.0 had a short lifespan as the most recent release (i.e., less than 1 month), but the percentage split between the archive formats are somewhat interesting. As far as our .com site is concerned, Textpattern 4.9.0 downloads for each archive format are currently as follows:
- .zip: 64% of downloads
- .tar.gz: 25% of downloads
- .tar.xz: 11% of downloads
With Textpattern 4.9.1 less than 24 hours old, downloads for each archive format are currently as follows:
- .zip: 67% of downloads
- .tar.gz: 24% of downloads
- .tar.xz: 10% of downloads
…so broadly the same.
