Firefox and m3u8 streams?
This is not strictly a txp question, but maybe one of you knowledgeable bunch has encountered this before me.
I have a project in the making which has a section with a podcast episode and various sections of interviews with people recounting their memories. I have the audio files on mux as a streaming server and have used the media-chrome web component to make a styleable iframe-less, cookie-less player. I really like the combination of mux and player and it all works just perfectly … except for in Firefox (Windows and Mac), which just stubbornly does nothing.
The console says:
HTTP-Content-Type "application/vnd.apple.mpegurl" wird nicht unterstützt. Laden der Medienressource https://stream.mux.com/……………… fehlgeschlagen.
…
Medien können nicht wiedergegeben werden. Keine Decoder für angefragte Formate: application/vnd.apple.mpegurl
(Translation content type … unsupported. Error loading media resource … Media could not be played. No decoder available for the requested format. …)
I thought it might be my server needing a special mime-type but it’s the same with my local webserver. I don’t think it makes any difference because the streaming server transcodes, but I’ve tried with both mp3 and m4a as the original file. Is there a trick to this? The weird thing is, when I play the asset from within the mux dashboard on firefox, it does play.

Re: Firefox and m3u8 streams?
This has a vague smell of Firefox + HLS being a bit wonky, which has happened in the past. Anything useful here?:

Re: Firefox and m3u8 streams?
Thanks. This tallies with my own research. I was completely unaware that firefox doesn’t support HLS stream playlists and it looks like I’m going to have to either have a stab at making an hls.js bridge (I find only articles for doing that for video not audio) or provide a notice directing Firefox users to plugins or other browsers.

In case it helps anyone, including hls.js and using it as described on GitHub does allow firefox to ingest the stream. I just adapted it to act not he <audio> element. The Media Chrome player picks up on it immediately. You can also test for native support before bringing in hls.js. Phew!
