Consider a core theme with dark mode detection / toggle.
I think it can be done with CSS and a little JS, it certainly doesn’t need a big framework to accomplish.

What do you mean by “with dark mode detection / toggle.” ?
Both Hive admin and the Textpattern public theme already have a dark theme built in.
To limit the use of media queries light-dark() works great (a Bloke notes), but check backwards compatibility.
Where is that emoji for a solar powered submarine when you need it ?

Both Hive admin and the Textpattern public theme already have a dark theme built in.
“Detection” == show the appropriate dark / light theme depending on the browser / operating system preferences.
“Toggle” == provide a switch / toggle override for light / dark, per the Hive admin theme.
