Forum downtime: December 18 2025
This forum was down for a period on the above date.
Cause: A faulty external storage volume used for logging. This volume has been used for around 2 years without issue, but there were numerous write errors to the volume over the two hours running up to the downtime.
Effect: Nginx (the web server) couldn’t write to the logs, and it bailed out. When an Nginx restart was attempted, it failed to write to the logs and failed to start…hence, forum down.
Fix: I’ve switched the logging to another area, recompiled Nginx to not point to the old location, and I’ve tweaked the configuration to be ‘barebones’ for now as I investigate other related issues.
The future: The forum server is an older server in our fleet, and will be retired next year as part of the forum upgrade program. For now, it’s working. More information will be forthcoming regarding the forum when we have a timeline and plan of action.
