Software discounts and recommendations redux
Our previous thread has been corrupted at a database level, for reasons unknown. This has resulted in broken links and general weirdness. I have locked it.
I am creating this thread and manually altering the date to December 1 2024 in order to attach the orphaned posts from Algaris, and additionally give us a new base on which to build.
When I figure out how to shift Algaris’ post(s) above into the right chronological order, I will update this thread. Sorry for the mess.

Note that is for the newly release Acorn 8 (and check system requirements: macOS 14 or 15). Release notes.
I’ll test it one of these days.

Panic is having a 40% off sale for its Nova code editing app. The sale ends of 14 October.

I renewed my subscription literally three days before this sale in the hope it fixed a bug that I’d been experiencing for a few versions…and I even delayed that renewal since I’d worked around the bug sufficiently that I could live with it.
Bug still present with current version, and I missed the 40% off thing. Bit of an eye-roller, but life goes on!

Adobe killer Affinity by Serif is now totally free from Affinity Canva
https://www.affinity.studio
The free download does require one to create. a free account on Canva, but there is no need to remain online thereafter.
(I bought V1 and V2 of the their software when they were Affinity Serif))

…and another great app joins the AI slop-fuelled hellscape. A sad day. It was inevitable with the Canva acquisition, but I was hoping this day wouldn’t come so soon.

I’ve got an account so no problem there, but this is sad news for the V2 suite I bought. From their FAQ (addition mine):
What if I prefer to use the Affinity V2 suite?
That’s totally fine. Your Affinity V2 license (via Serif) remains valid and Serif will continue to keep activation servers online [for now]. But please note that these apps won’t receive future updates.
The homogenized combined app requires a Canva monthly subscription to unlock some of the features. And no doubt the number of features available with subscription-only will creep as the app is updated. Bad, Canva. Bad.

Yes, I wondered about that as well. So far i’ll remain optimistic that I won’t ever need any of the subscription-only features or add-ons.
So for me it’s Careful, Canva. Careful or I’ll boot you off my computer.

IOW, the Adobe killer has been killed by its own greed.
The apps are not available from the App store anymore, but I still can download those I bought (I think, those are still listed as available).

So can anyone recommend any alternatives to the suite?
