Added to UCEPROTECTL3 email block list, and some forum tech info
Our forum server IPv4 address has been added to the UCEPROTECT Level 3 block list. Again.
This means our email sending capability is limited to email servers who use UCEPROTECT on their filtering. The vast majority of servers don’t touch UCEPROTECT, so the majority of emails sent won’t bounce.
It appears the entire /20 block we’re on is listed on UCEPROTECT, so we likely have one or more noisy neighbours. Ironically, when I checked some random address in that block, they were all listed on additional block lists over and above UCEPROTECT, so it’s like the Wild West out here in this IP space sometimes, I swear.
At the moment, there’s almost nothing we can do aside from move servers to a difference IP range. That’s in the medium term plan when it’s time to rebuild our servers, likely over winter.
As an aside, this forum runs on FluxBB and an older-but-still-supported version of PHP. Support for this version of PHP will end soon, and we’ll need to take steps to switch to a supported fork of or successor to FluxBB since our current forum software doesn’t play nicely on newer PHP. This might be a good opportunity to consider options for other non-FluxBB-related forum software, so expect a forum discussion about…forum…discussions…in the coming months.

Ugh, annoying. I remember when email was easy and I could send a message to someone as darth@deathstar.com and no server batted an eyelid.

Our forward and reverse DNS is consistent and recognised as such. Email server is in good shape. It’s not compromised, it’s passing as many tests as I can throw at it. The problem lies on another VPS.
There’s a way we can allowlist the IP address so it’s…for a fee. Yeah, no thanks…we’ll use project donations elsewhere.
