We can also imagine that large blocks (textareas, cf groups) become collapsible and open in a modal dialog, but UX is not my area of expertise.

Understood. Our default install will likely retain its current defaults of title, author, excerpt, body, article-image and cf1, cf2, even if they are sourced differently. My structure diagram above is my best take at ensuring there will minimal fallout when used with a legacy theme.
