Woops?! What's happening with the Software Recommendations topic?

On the Recent topics page I see new posts coming in (currently one from skewray), but after clicking that entry I’m thrown into page 1 of that topic. And clicking through to the last post from there I never reach the most recent ones, currently last is Bloke’s from yesterday 12:57:56.

Is that just me?

I’m seeing one complete page of the entire thread, with my post last.

Thanks for the report.

I suspect the database has got into a knot – I’ll need to unpick this manually with fresh eyes, otherwise there’s a risk of the entire thread going up in smoke if I get it wrong. The fluxBB database taxonomy is a little arcane & obscure, hence the need for the fresh eyes (and bravery).

I hate computers, some days.

Leave it with me, I will investigate. Again.

(Anyone got a server lump hammer?)

Re: Woops?! What's happening with the Software Recommendations topic?

It does it again right now. I receive an email notification that Algaris has posted about Acorn – I click the link in the email and I can see the post but as soon as I log in, there is no way to access it.

The post is listed on the category list (General discussions), but the link goes to the first post in the list.

Maybe time to lock that thread and start a new one?

Yes. Cursed thread is cursed. Let’s see how its replacement fares.

Looks like something weird is building up again: Although there are 2 responses, the forum’s counter states only “1”. But I hope it’s easier to get to the bottom of things in a small db table.

Now fixed – thank you for the report.

The forum database is by far the largest ‘asset’ we host. There’s a three-hourly backup to a Gzip’d tarball that takes a ~282MB .sql dump file & squashes it into ~81MB. I tested the backup with XZ instead of Gzip, and decided against it: the end result was considerably smaller but the time taken to compress was considerably longer. This is expected, since XZ is computationally much more expensive, but the ‘lag’ on the forum was unacceptable – too much time taken. Rather than flag the forum as maintenance mode every three hours, there’s a period of about 30 seconds where it just gets a little…slow…while the archive is made.

The backups are duplicated offsite with a Syncthing instance, which works really well. On the next round of server builds (ETA: spring 2025) I will be asking for willing volunteers to house additional offsite backups of our properties with a local Syncthing instance, as part of the disaster recovery plan that I’m working on.
